But he was wrong: the first big blow wasn’t delivered by any democratic dissident, but by the very same mercenaries that, just a few weeks ago, he congratulated for the conquest of the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut. ![]() When he launched the war on Ukraine in February of 2022, Vladimir Putin said that he thought that the Russian people would be able to distinguish “true patriots from scum and traitors.” This was again expressed at a rally in Moscow a month later, where he also stated that Russia’s “fifth column” was made up of those who had left the country or refused to serve in the army. ![]()
